Four Bruins Ink Contracts

Bruin baseball stars sign with MLB teams.

LOS ANGELES--Righthander Matt Klein signed a free agent contract with Oakland Athletics on Tuesday. Klein will report to Southern Oregon (A) of the Northwest League on Monday and join former Bruin teammate Eric Byrnes. Klein finished his collegiate career with an 8-3 record.

Byrnes, the Bruins starting right fielder for four years who was drafted in the eighth round draft pick by the Athletics, has signed with them and has already reported to Southern Oregon. Byrnes is UCLA's all-time career hits leader, runs leader and doubles leader.

Second baseman Nick Theodorou, a 27th round draft pick of the Dodgers, has signed with the team and will report to Yakima (A) of the Northwest League on Monday. Theodorou is UCLA's all-time career postseason hits leader. The 1997 Greek Collegiate Athlete of the Year led the Bruins in on base percentage in two of the last three seasons.

Catcher Casey Cloud, a 27th round draft pick of the Pirates, has signed with the Pirates and will report to Erie (A) of the New York Penn League later this week. Cloud started 49 games behind the plate for the Bruins in 1997, including seven of UCLA's eight postseason games.
