A's Notes 5/16/02

A's notes:

Eric Byrnes had a career-high three hits Thursday, scoring twice. Batting leadoff, Byrnes got the start at the last minute after Jeremy Giambi was scratched with a bruised right foot. Giambi, who was penciled in to leadoff and play left, fouled off two Derek Lowe pitches in two separate at-bats Wednesday night. Giambi is listed as day-to-day and will get at least another night off on Friday. "With the combination of the turf and his foot, he'll get the night off in Toronto," said Howe after Thursday's game. "We'll see after that." Byrnes was just happy to contribute to the win Thursday. "Whatever I can do to help maybe provide a spark is great," said the 26-year-old reserve outfielder. "There hasn't been a lot going on in the last three games, so to bring some life to the team, I'm real excited to be that guy."
