Rather than spending the winter at home in the Bay Area, outfielder Eric Byrnes tore up the Dominican Winter League hitting .344 with 11 home runs and 34 RBI, earning him MVP honors. Playing for the Tigres de Licey, led by the River Cats' manager, Bob Geren, Byrnes hit leadoff as the Tigres made reached the league championship. Byrnes' 11 homers were the most by a Licey player since Alonzo Perry hit 11 in 1952.
