Bay Area Native Assigned to River Cats From Midland

SACRAMENTO - The Sacramento River Cats announced today that outfielder Eric Byrnes has been assigned to the team's active roster from Midland (Double-A). He will join the team Saturday in New Orleans.
Byrnes, 24, was born in Redwood City and resides in Woodside. He hit .306 (78-for-255) with 5 HR and 37 RBI in 66 games at Midland this season, his third in professional baseball. Byrnes split last season between Modesto (Single-A) and Midland. He hit .337 (123-for-365) with 6 HR and 66 RBI in 96 games at Modesto and .238 (39-for-164) with 1 HR and 22 RBI in 43 games with Midland. Byrnes began his career in 1998 with Southern Oregon (Short-A), where he hit .314 (53-for-169) with 7 HR and 31 RBI in 42 games. He finished his first season at Visalia (Single-A) with a .426 (46-for-108) average, 4 HR and 21 RBI in 29 games.
Byrnes, a 1994 graduate of St. Francis High School in Mountain View, was selected by the Oakland Athletics in the eighth round of the June 1998 First-Year Player Draft out of UCLA.
